‘I lost my best mate and had a car crash… then found God’

Car crash

Chris shares his thrilling story of coming to know Jesus this past year.

“I was brought up a Christian, but a few things happened in my life that pulled me away from Jesus. I lost my best mate, lost a baby, had a car crash. My thought at that time was, God doesn’t love me, God doesn’t want me. I turned to drugs, and ended up actively addicted to class A drugs. It ruined my friendships and relationships.

Rock bottom

I was coming back from a party, just over 2 years ago. I had a crash on the motorway, and my car was spun round 7 times. You’d have thought I was dead, looking at me. I came out of that car with just a cut on my finger…

I called my mum and she said, “there must have been angels around the car.” At the time I wasn’t sure, but I thought, ‘I’ll give it a go’. I was touched at church, I felt something from it. I wanted to give my life to Christ. But I ended up back in drug addiction, and adultery. Everything I could do wrong, I did it. And I didn’t see anything wrong with it.

5 months ago I hit rock bottom. My relationship, friendships, and family relationships went down the drain. I tried to kill myself. My mum was at the flat that day, and managed to rescue me.

What changed?

In the hospital, I saw a white feather cross coming towards me in front of my eyes. I opened my eyes and Jesus was standing in the corner of the room. I thought to myself, ‘maybe Jesus does want me’.

The next day was a Sunday. I woke up at half 7, and the first thing on my mind was to pray and the second thing was to go to church. I called my cousin and said I wanted to go to her church. She was shocked! I went to church and told them I wanted to get baptised. Someone I met at the church managed to get me baptised that week!

I got baptised and the addiction was taken away from me that very week. It was a magical thing. But still, I was a newborn Christian, and I had to learn to walk again.

What have I learned?

An important thing I’ve learned is, even after you are born again you might still sin. That’s been hard for me to come to terms with. Even though we are sinning, we can turn to God. God wants us even when we’re broken. He wants broken people, and he can save us, he can make our lives better. Those who really need God’s help – he’s here for you.

The most important thing is to talk to God. He does talk back to you. It might not be a physical voice. It might be a thought that pops into your head.

Life’s not going to be easy when you turn to God. But you can believe the good parts are still coming. God has good plans for our life. You can ask God, ‘show me your plans’. When you are believing in Jesus, we don’t control the plan for our life. He has the plan for your life, so we can just keep following him.

I would recommend, if you’re thinking about turning to God – just do it!

What has God done in your life since then?

Another friend got baptised last week. I got a message from him around 5 in the morning saying, “can we talk about Christ stuff”. He didn’t know much but wanted to talk about it. I asked, “are you ready to give your life to Christ”, and he said yes! My friend had his hand in the air as he prayed on the phone, and he felt a physical pull on his hand, pulling him up! Seeing a brother being baptised was amazing. It just shows me that God has a plan.

Things are happening all over my life.

Some friends and I were praying in Oxford on the high street. A homeless guy saw a Bible in my hands and was a bit threatening towards me. He asked him, “are you hungry?”. He was and so I got him a cheeseburger. We were able to talk to him and pray for him. He was in complete tears because he felt Jesus for the first time!

What do you love about Jesus?

Everything! Literally everything. He saved my life. Jesus is the most unselfish person to have ever been on this planet. He went through all that pain on the cross for our sins, and even after that we still sin, but he still forgives us. He loves us.”
