‘Is Jesus Worth Trusting?’

worth trusting. girl smiles in row of people.

To trust someone, we need to know their core. We don’t always understand the individual choices or actions of the people we love most, but if we know their core character, we can ultimately trust them and release ourselves to a close relationship with them. It’s the same with God.

A trustworthy character

To find out if God’s worth trusting, we need to explore his character. The best place to do that is reading what the Bible has to say about him. Exodus chapter 34 says God is “compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, overflowing with loyal love and faithfulness”. The ultimate expression of God’s character can be found in the life and person of Jesus Christ. God became a man in the person of Jesus Christ to suffer and die for the consequences of our sin. At the core of God’s heart is a sacrificial love for people.

Do you know anyone like that? Have you had a taste of loyal love, patience, compassion, faithfulness, or sacrificial love through a friend or confidante?

Trusting in God

We don’t always understand our friends’ actions and we certainly won’t always understand God. A lot of why he does what he does, or why he allows what he allows to happen will remain a mystery throughout our lives on earth. The only thing we can do is learn more and more about his character, his core. Only then will we be able to answer the question, “is God worth trusting?” The uncertainty and big questions of life then begin to be filtered through his character and we can rest in his friendship even when we don’t have all the answers. That’s when we begin to trust God.
